Our Approach

Our Approach to Treatment

Our therapy helps your child develop a healthy sense of self, create and sustain healthy relationships and address their individual clinical needs. Our approach is effective because of the strong relationships developed between your child, their therapist and all of our staff. By establishing rapport and setting clear and consistent boundaries, we have created an optimal therapeutic environment, resulting in positive changes and growth in your child.

Your child will benefit from:

Individual Therapy

Our therapists work with your child to examine their thoughts, feelings, behaviors and relationship patterns, so they can better understand themselves and the issues causing them to struggle. Therapists use a variety of therapeutic models, including Motivational Interviewing, Solution Focused Therapy and Interventions, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Social Skills Training, Anger Management, a variety of therapy workbooks on such topics as grief and loss, adoption, trauma, functional family therapy, family systems therapy and other appropriate therapy modalities.

We work to resolve frustrations, fears, anger and perceived inadequacies that may have led to your child’s problems. Counseling is individualized and focuses on:

  • Finding and increasing sources of self-confidence
  • Resolving conflicts
  • Understanding strong feelings
  • Processing solutions
  • Developing healthy coping skills
  • Seeing behavior objectively and gaining a sense of control

Group Therapy

Your child participates in group therapy four days per week. Therapy may focus on a specific weekly theme or specific issue. In group therapy, a comfortable environment is established, creating trust and enabling your child to openly express feelings within a group of peers. Our staff directs group sessions where your child is encouraged to openly give and receive feedback. The biggest value of group therapy is that your child interacts with other adolescents facing similar issues. Your child begins to see they are not alone in their struggles and there is hope and help. It is comforting to hear from other teens that have similar difficulties or have already worked through problems. This group interaction gives your child the opportunity to learn more about the way they interact with others.

Milieu Therapy

Milieu therapy is a planned treatment environment where everyday events and interpersonal interactions are therapeutically designed for the purpose of producing and supporting changes in behavior. The objective of the therapeutic milieu is to provide a clearly delineated set of expectations for your child, combined with a secure and nurturing environment. At Boulder Creek Academy, all of our staff members serve as role models to assist your son or daughter in learning improved problem solving and individual and community relationship skills.

Family Therapy

You are directly involved in counseling with your child and their therapist on a weekly basis through conference calls or online video platforms. Family therapy is a type of psychological counseling and through this process, we work with you and your child to deepen family connections, improve communication, resolve conflicts and identify family dynamic issues needing to be resolved. Letter writing or written assignments are also a key component of improving relationships along with in-person therapy sessions during parent seminars or visits.

Therapeutic Behavioral Interventions

We use behavioral management protocols to respond to ongoing negative behaviors. Interventions are implemented to address these behaviors and are tailored to meet the therapeutic needs of your child. Our individualized behavioral management strategies follow a progressive, intervention model including redirection through verbal cueing, self-monitored time out and staff-directed time out. All staff, including office and direct care, are trained in verbal de-escalation and crisis intervention and prevention.

Restorative Circles

At Boulder Creek Academy we use Restorative Circles to support students when they have a conflict with one another. The restorative approach affirms the inherent worth of every child. The process holds students accountable while empowering students with responsibility for resolving their own conflicts. Students gain valuable insight into the perspectives of others and learn active listening skills. The restorative practice provides our students with valuable tools for healing relationships and achieving mutual understanding and collaboration.

Substance/Internet/Gaming Abuse Prevention and Education

If your child struggles with extreme internet/gaming or substance use, we work with your child to understand the effects of this abuse, how to identify addiction issues, and to look into the reasons for use. Your child works closely with our certified substance abuse/addiction specialist, who collaborates with their therapist on areas of concern, goals and relapse prevention plan.
